About the work:
Encompassing feminist ideas on body image and the normalisation of variable body sizes for women, a series of plaster-condom experiments were created to speak on this. The aims involved in the process of making surrounded unplanned expectations, going with the flow of how the individual pieces chose to appear. This is one of the main features of a woman’s body of which is highly scrutinised with unrealistic expectations in the media. They are expected to look a certain way, have a specific shape, when this is not realistic. The techniques used within creating the works were the same each time, although each outcome was different. This became a metaphor for what naturally occurs within the body. Every vessel has the same makeup, but all look different, of which is something to be celebrated, not insulted.
The incorporation of both the condom and the aesthetic view of a breast symbolises both female and male traits. This was further developed through contexts on dominating feminine and masculine objects that signify gender within the media. Involved in this are the high heels, leather belt, hair extensions, motherhood, and a tie. The impacts of outside views on women’s bodies and how they are expected to perform are weighted. Within this transpires expectations, sexualisation, lack of freedom and vulnerability.
